My name is Jo, I live with my husband Paul and our two children, Rowan who is now 14 and Thomas who is 11, in the suberbs of Bristol in the UK. We share our home with our Boston's, Daltdach Kennel is a small family run kennel whose dogs are first and foremost our family pets and breeding them is our hobby, however we are registered with the 'Dog Breeders Association' and have now registered as a Kennel Club Assured Breeder.
Up until early 2010 we owned and bred miniature Dachshunds, however having lost the 4th out the 5 dachshunds we had owned, at a young age, we decided a change of breed was needed. We decided on the Boston Terrier as both Paul and I had admired and loved the breed for a great number of years. But were advised by a Boston breeder back in 2000 to wait until the boys were older to have one in view of the fact that both boys had disablilities and the boisterous nature of the Boston. We have since regretted this decision to wait and wish we had chosen the Boston instead of the Dachshund all those years ago as their boisterours nature is part of what makes them so appealing... Although we do agree that they do not suit everyone and you have to concider your own personal circumstances very carefully to decide whether they are the breed for you... We were given the opportunity of a four month old rescue Boston who we named Winston - We are unsure of what he went through in those first few months, but with the love, care and training he so desperately needed, we have never once regretted having him. We had no intention of using him in our breeding programme as despite being a pure bred Boston and a nice example of the breed, because of the fact he was rescued from his original breeder and was not Kennel Club registered we decided to have him neutered at the age of 7 months.
We waited until Winston had properly settled with us before looking around for a suitable Boston bitch to use as our foundation bitch. Originally we were looking for a puppy who we could raise from the start, but we found Lulu an 18 month old brindle and white bitch who has an excellent pedigree and who desperately needed a new home as her previous owners found her to much to cope with. Lulu had spent the first year and half of her life competing for attention with four Burmese Mountain dogs, over eating and getting very little exercise. Consequently being so board she would find her own entertainment in the form of chewing anything from shoes & handbags to furniture. When she arrived home with us she was very overweight and extremely unfit, also because Lulu had been used to doing exactly as she pleased, we now had a huge task ahead of us retraining her. Lulu has turned out to be a fantastic mother and brood bitch and is now very gentle and laid back, she is a real credit to us and proof of what can be achieved with a little patience and some hardwork.
After careful consideration and taking advice from several other Boston breeders we made the decision to look for our own Stud dog so we could offer Stud services to other breeders and also use him with our own future bitches. We had experiance of stud work previously with our Dachshunds so again we set out looking for a suitable puppy, but our search lead us to a 11 month old Seal Brindle Boston boy who had already been proven twice while with his previous owner at just 8 and 9 months old! Stanley was having to be re-homed due to his previous owners moving to a new house where they could not keep dogs and due to thier personal circumstances had been quite neglected -. He has 18 different Champions in his 5 generation pedigree and is a very nice looking Boston. Stan had originally been purchased for breeding purposes and had been kept in an outside kennel for the 9 months they had owned him, His chain collar was so tight, it had begun to cut into the skin on his neck and had to be cut off to remove it! He was underweight and his back leg muscles were very over developed from constantly jumping up at his kennel door. Stan had no idea about living in a home as part of a family and had not ever been on a lead to go for a walk. Not suprisingly he was quite depressed when we first picked him up and brought him home, but with kind but firm handling he has soon developed into a happy little chap, who loves his home comforts. I am still not sure what I am most shocked about - the sate that Stan was in and the living conditions and poor treatment he had been subjected to or the fact he had been used for stud at such a young age...
