Microchipping is now acknowledged to be the most acceptable form of permanent identification available for companion animals and horses. It is permanent, tamperproof, reliable and painless.
Microchipping ensures that if your pet is lost or stollen at any time throughout it's life you have a good chance of being reunited with your pet when it is found by the Police, re-homming centre or Dog Warden. This is why all Daltdach puppies are microchipped before leaving us.
It is not at the present time a legal requirement to have your dog microchipped, but most implanters, vets, animal rescue centres and Dog Wardens are calling for it to be made law.
In addition to being Microchipped it is a legal requirement that all dogs wear a collar with a tag which states the owners address and telephone number when outside of the home. It is never a good idea to put the dogs name on the tag because if your dog was to be stollen the thieves would know what to call your dog. The best format for an ID Tag of a microchipped animal is to have the word 'MICROCHIPPED' instead of your dogs name, along with your house number and your postcode followed by a mobile telephone number which you can be easily contacted on at all times. All Daltdach puppies come with an ID Tag engraved with the above information of their new owner.
I have been qualified to microchip companion animals since July 2004 and have experiance of microchipping dogs of many different breeds, cats and other small animals such as Rabits. You can view my Certificate to implant microchips by following the link to view My Qualifications above. I use Peddymark microchips as I prefer registering the animals I microchip with the Petlog database as it offers a very fast efficient service and has an excellent track record of reuniting lost pets with their owners compared to other pet microchip databases. There has also been some problems relating to the bio thermal types of microchips and therefore I have decided to go back to using what I know to be safe and reliable.
The PeddyMark ID162 device is an 11.5mm x 2mm bio compatible glass capsule containing a microchip. The chip is passive and does not contain a power source therefore will effectively last for ever. The PeddyMark microchip is activated by the reader and transmits a globally unique identification number to a reader where it appears on the LCD display. The technology is standardised and conforms to ISO standard 11784/11785 and it can be used for virtually any pet.
The procedure is very simple and is no more painful than any other subcutaneous injection between the shoulder blades. A pet will not be aware of the microchip's presence under the skin once it has been implanted.
Once implanted the pet and owner details are registered on the national Petlog database which is run in association with the Kennel Club, the owner is issued with a certificate which contains the details of the microchip number and a password - you can then amend yours and your pets records accordingly throughout your pets life either by post or online through the Petlog website.
